ORLANDO – As the 57th edition of the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando opened Oct. 28, a big presence on the show floor was missing: Tiger Woods.
The reigning star of the sport for over 10 years usually has his likeness plastered all over the show, but even Tiger’s Nike sponsor was “ix-nay on the iger-Tay” this year.
Unsurprisingly, the sport's biggest athlete was a no-show at the anuual PGA convention, which ran Jan. 28-30 at the Orange County Convention Center, since Tiger has dropped off the radar screen following his marital infidelity problems that surfaced Thanksgiving weekend.
Among the nearly 1,000 exhibitors and numerous golf pros attending the giant show, talk of Woods was almost taboo. Images of the superstar were also hard to find.
The PGA Merchandise Show is usually decked out with an overwhelming number of Tiger photos on the show floor, since Woods is also an Orlando area resident.
Exhibitors were scrambling prior to the show to de-Tiger their booths.
One exhibitor noted that attendance was down this year, but he blamed it on the E-word, rather than the T-word. |
